What is cachexia?

Cachexia is a form of involuntary weight and muscle loss that occurs with severe illness, and cancer in particular. It is not ordinary emaciation due to insufficient food intake. It is an active process where the body breaks itself down, even if food intake is normal.

In dogs with cancer, cachexia is diagnosed in more than half of patients. It is not only a sign of illness but also exacerbates the disease itself: dogs with cachexia tolerate treatments less well, recover more slowly, and have a shorter survival time.

Why does a dog with cancer lose muscle mass?

Cancer disrupts metabolism in a fundamental way. The tumor:

  • Consumes sugars inefficiently (via anaerobic glycolysis), causing the body to be in a constant energy deficit
  • Causes chronic inflammation, which breaks down muscle protein for fuel
  • Increases certain hormones and cytokines (such as TNF-alpha and IL-6) that stimulate muscle breakdown
  • Reduces appetite, which also decreases nutrient intake

The result: the body breaks down muscle tissue to produce energy, even when fat is available. This is why dogs with cancer become thinner, but also weaker, more tired, and less resilient.

How to recognize cachexia in your dog?

Cachexia begins subtly. Pay attention to:

  • Visible ribs or vertebrae that were previously covered
  • Loss of muscle mass around the back, hindquarters, or shoulders — the dog looks "hollowed out"
  • Weight loss despite a reasonable appetite
  • Weakness or difficulty getting up, walking, or climbing stairs
  • Faster fatigue during short walks

In doubt? Have your veterinarian assess the body condition score (BCS) and muscle condition score (MCS). These provide a more objective picture than weight alone.

What can you do as a pet owner?

1. Ensure sufficient high-quality protein

Counteracting muscle breakdown starts with the supply of building blocks. Dogs with cancer need more protein than healthy dogs — not less. Choose food with animal protein of high biological availability (chicken, fish, egg, meat).

2. Add omega-3 fatty acids

EPA and DHA (from fish oil) inhibit inflammatory cytokines that drive muscle breakdown. They not only help temper inflammation but also slow down the cachexia process itself. Multiple studies show that omega-3 supplementation significantly better preserves muscle mass in dogs with cancer.

3. Small, frequent meals
